I am the gringa
too Americanized to be Latine.
My Spanish lacks the ganas and structure
and I am left stuttering and grasping what’s left of my heritage.
I can hear the taunting through the
gaps of their teeth as their tongue pushes rolling R’s
and perfect Spanish grammar.
The same Español built off the extermination of my indigenous ancestors:
cultivated and cursed by conquistadores who would be shocked
by the audacity that their descendant is nothing but
gender-fluid queer who says, Latine is a word.

I know my Idiomas;
Pensando en ingles y talking in Spanish
And sometimes I just speak straight pendejadas.
It is a mixture of midwestern mannerisms and Michoacan’s crudeness.
I am the gringa who is sangrona, brillante, chingona chicana
Who will cling to her cultura like the bandera of her country
Because no matter how Americanized I am
I know my tongue speaks back home

Angeles Rangel | I am a Latine artist and writer currently studying in literature. If there is something I cannot draw, I write it. I often like to focus my written works through my experiences being a queer Latine. I hope that my words speak to the weirdos like me.

Samantha Franco | I am an artist and a first-generation college student pursuing an art education degree. I use different mediums depending on the message I seek to convey. I am a multimedia artist with backgrounds in painting, drawing, sculpture, and digital media. Common processes in my work include translation across mediums. Much of my process is experimentation and how I can push my methods to respond to the challenges and needs of a given artwork. I want my pieces to tap into the internal wonder that everyone has. My work in its smallest form is meant to connect to the audience’s inner child.
